Posts & Updates

I hope everyone has had a safe and happy festive season. Sadly, our old girl Brandy’s health declined over the holiday period and we have spent most of our time caring for her and assessing her quality of life. On the 3rd of January, we made the decision to say our final goodbye. For this reason, we have a somewhat brief newsletter this month and Brandy has taken our pet of the month spot.

I am super excited and proud to be sponsoring a kennel at Dogwatch ❤ This means Nursing Pawfection makes a monthly donation towards caring for the dog housed in our kennel. Not only do we get a fancy sign on the gate and know where our donation is going, but we also get regular updates on the hound residing in our kennel!

We’ve had a busy wee month. We celebrated Pilot’s 8th birthday and two heavenly birthdays Crowley and Codie. The humans have attended a drawing class and several regular sessions at the CatNap Cafe. We are both a little in love with one of the resident cats named Mirabelle. She reminds us of our boy Atticus who we adopted from the CatNap Cafe almost 3 years ago. I have been busy helping at my agility club, filling in some locum shifts in at the SPCA and catching up on some administration tasks. I also had the opportunity to visit Gentle Waters Pet Cremation, more on this below!

The year is flying by and before we know it, Guy Fawkes will be upon us. For the majority of us, this is not our pet’s first Guy Fawkes, so we have some idea how they will react. I cannot stress enough, if you know your pet finds these events stressful, NOW is the time to create a plan. Even if your pet has not found these events stressful in the past, I still highly recommend taking precautionary measures to keep them safe and calm. You never know when one bad experience can frighten your pet, creating a lifelong anxiety. Ollie is a great example of this. He spent his puppyhood living on an army base and has always been accustomed to loud bangs so, fireworks have never concerned him. As he gets older, and sleeps more deeply, he is more easily startled by loud noises. It would be very easy for him to develop anxiety around fireworks if we did not manage this well. Sadly, every single year, animals go missing, suffer severe distress or a seriously injured or killed as a result of fireworks.

There is a big change coming to the Nursing Pawfection crew. After 3 years, I have decided to give up my permanent Veterinary Nursing shift in the SPCA vet clinic on Fridays.

The warmer months are in sight! Who’s excited?!  The Nursing Pawfection humans are big fans of Winter but I think the felines have had their fill of naps by the heat pump and are ready to enjoy the hammock in the sun again!  In this newsletter, we have information about the upcoming Selwyn Pet Expo and our very first Pet of the Month!

Welcome to July and Winter! It has been a chilly one so far and I have certainly seen that results of that in my grooming patients. Coats are getting thick and fluffy to keep warm, but also get wet and tangled when pets are outdoors. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get on top of these things BEFORE matting occurs. Grooming appointments fill up fast at this time of year, so get in touch soon if you need helps with your pet’s Winter jacket!

It’s a late and brief newsletter this month. The last week has been hectic with one very sick little cat.

Welcome to May and another super newsy newsletter. As I was planning this newsletter in my head, I was overwhelmed with the amount of family, foster, product,  and industry updates  I have! It’s been a busy month.

Happy Easter and welcome to April! The Nursing Pawfection team have had a pretty quiet long weekend. As Ollie gets older, he wants more frequent short walks, so long weekends are great for getting in LOTS of those. With six foster cats and our own seven felines, the rest of the weekend was spent entertaining, cleaning and socialising them too.

At the end of this month, we celebrate Easter. While working in general practice, every single Easter we had a least one dog who had eaten a toxic amount of chocolate which resulted in us inducing vomiting. Chocolate vomit is a smell I will never forget! For this reason, March at Nursing Pawfection is all about dangerous foods.
